Hi, my name is Clay. To me life is about finding what you enjoy and love, and spending your time doing those things. A big part of that for me is surfing. I grew up in Texas, playing music and various sports. I was into skating and wake boarding, and loved to keep up with surfing and snowboarding. I always wanted to live in a place where I could surf daily and be around people who enjoyed the same things I did. So as soon as I graduated high school I moved to Hawaii. It was awesome getting to surf everyday and to be able to see some of the pros I had grown up watching in person. A little over a year later I moved to Los Angeles to be in a culture that is all about surfing, skating, and music!

AKA "Ohhh Clayton" or youngan. Fun fact: Can fall asleep anywhere, lives in a van, is shy beyond belief unless he is teach or surfing, and loves pizza.

BEST WITH; YOUNG ADULTS.

My name is Ryan, I grew up surfing on the coast line of South Africa. I have been surfing for over 10 years and teaching around the world for the last 5 years. I come to teach lessons at kapowui every summer, from May to September. I recently started my own surf school in Wilderness, S.A., with Jonny. I have competed in several national contests but I find my deepest passion for surfing is most felt during free surf sessions with friends at some remote surf break in a secluded area off the beaten track. I love teaching people how to surf and sharing the stoke of surfing just as much as love surfing myself. So come hang out with me and enjoy one of the most unique sports in the world with all of your Kapowui friends and family.

AKA Rye Bread. Fun Fact: Ryan is ALWAYS up for a surf sesh and new adventure. Every time you talk to him about surfing his First question is "Did you get Barreled!" or "Let's go get Barreled!!".

BEST WITH; KIDS, FEMALES, SPECIAL NEEDS, NERVOUS STUDENTS, AND OLDER ADULTS.

Hi, I'm Todd but sometimes they call me Fraggle Rock. Probably because I can be a bit quirky and goofy, but I'm ok with that- life is all about having fun and catching waves.
As your instructor I will teach you the proper techniques you'll need to catch waves and assist you with catching the right waves. Surfing can definitely be challenging, but it's always worth it and the most rewarding thing a person can do. So let me show you what the surfers life is all about and how fun the ocean can be. Whether you're a beginner learning for the first time or a seasoned veteran looking to improve your game, the Kapowui method will get you up surfing with a smile  or help you improve your game.  So come join me and let's ride some waves together and share the greatest fun life has to offer.

AKA Shaolin / Fragle Rock- Fun fact:  Todd spins fire at music festivals and in his free time. He is always out and about in Venice living the bohemian artist surfer life.

BEST WITH; KIDS, SPECIAL NEEDS, YOUNG ADULTS.

Leon, is from South Africa and was first introduced to surfing at age 15 when he surfed in the shark filled waters of Jay Bay. He immediately fell in love with the sport! Since learning to surf, he has been surfing around the world looking for less sharky waves in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Belize, Guatemala, and Indo! Now he wants to share his passion with you. It's not just about the surfing Leon loves but the spirituality he finds when he's riding a wave or just waiting for a wave. Before surfing Leon was an avid skateboarder. Board sports have always been a very important part in 'Leon's life and hopes to pass that love on to you! Now let's go surf!

AKA -GQ. Fun fact: Leon is an accomplished model and won Mr. South Africa. Comes during the summer from SA to do lessons and hang out with his surfer family. One of the nicest and most respectful person you will ever meet. He currently  helps his father build houses in the hot African sun and can't wait to get back to Venice where it's only 90 degrees.

Aloha, my name is Martin, I am  the founder of Kapowui. I live, eat, sleep, and dream surfing. I live a block from the beach and surf every day. I've surfed all over the world and my favorite place is the North Shore of Hawaii. My lifes calling is bringing the stoke of surfing to everyone who is interested learning. The feeling of surfing is unlike any thing you have ever felt before, it is indescribable, I call it  "Kapowui", which means "pure joy". Hence the name of my company.

I started kapowui 10 years ago with 1 old beat up surf board an a couple or worn out wetsuits. I taught lessons for 10 years while building the company and after many years of fine tuning, I developed the lesson plan that all the instructors use today. I incorporated my ISA surf coaching and aquatic safety training, my 30 years of surfing experience, 20 years of personal training, 6 years as a rescue swimmer in the Navy,  my advance knowledge in bio-mechanics & kinesiology for a lesson that is comprehensive, technical, streamline, safe, successful and most importantly, fun. That's why I guarantee that you will be surfing your first lesson or your next lesson is free. I personally train all of my instructors and will not let them teach a lesson until they have meet my high standards.  The instructors will give feedback on every wave you catch and miss, break down everything you did right or could have done better, as well as cheer your successes and groan at your mishaps.

As the owner/manager, I rarely get to do lessons. So if you book me, I will assign you to the instructor who I think is best suited for your needs, aptitude, personality, age, and skill level. The more information you give about yourself when booking online, will help me assign the best instructor for you.  I look forward to meeting you and hearing about how much fun your surf lesson was with whomever you chose to be your instructor. Mahalo for choosing Kapowui!

AKA KAPOWUI. Fun fact:  All American mutt and athlete, raised on  a farm in Georgia, served 6 years in the Navy as a petty officer on a SARS team (Search and Rescue Swimmer), was a traveling professional dancer for 10 years, I collect old VW buses, I have more surf boards than cloths, and I lived in a van for 10 years while building Kapowui.  Morality, integrity, conscientiousness, are not mere words to me, they are a code I live my life by.

Hi this is Garrett ! I live in Venice beach California , originally from Arizona and an ASU graduate. I have been surfing for roughly 5 years now and love the ocean.;One of the main reasons I moved to California is to be closer to the ocean and take advantage of mother nature’s gifts . As well as a surf instructor , I spend my time skating, doing yoga, acting , and personal training if I’m not out catching waves. I love my pitbull Ruca you will see her pulling me down the boardwalk on my skateboard on the daily. Id say the best part about teaching someone to surf is the stoke in their eyes when they pop up. Looking forward to meeting you and showing you a great time with : Kids and beginners

Hi guys! I’m Madeline.  I’m originally from Detroit, where, contrary to common belief - there is surfing (in the frigid great lakes)… but thankfully, I did not learn there.  I first surfed in Hawaii when I was 12 and I knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life but it would be a minute before that became a reality for me.  Before moving to LA I spent a few years traveling the world and living out of hotels and tour buses. I have seen a lot of places, but ultimately decided to settle out here because of warm weather, sunshine and year round surf!  I met Marty and all the Kapowui instructors a few years back and I am eternally grateful for all the knowledge they passed onto me. They pretty much have not been able to get rid of me since! I now live a block away and surf every opportunity I get.  Surfing is somewhat of a spiritual experience for me, the perfect combination of pushing your body to its physical limits, achieving a flow state, and connecting with nature at the same time. No two days are ever the same, the ocean is full of surprises and always challenges me.  It is such a gift to be able to live where I live, be with the ocean every day, and now to be able to share this amazing sport with you!

Will,
Todd

Hey guys, Colston Here. I’m new at Kapowui and very excited to be here! I hail from the snowy mountains of British Columbia Canada which is pretty much the opposite of Venice beach in every way. I spent 10 awesome years of my life as a professional big mountain skier and I’m loving the change of scenery! Surfing began for me 10 years ago as an off-season hobby in the freezing cold waters of Vancouver Island but has since taken over as the central tenant of my life. The search for perfect waves has brought me to places such as Indonesia, Hawaii, France, and Mexico and I have taken part in some remote film missions and national competitions. I’ve always enjoyed visiting California, it’s my happy place I love the LA lifestyle and Venice Beach weirdos. I take pride in breaking down the fundamentals of surf techniques and water safety. Ensuring each student has the time of their lives learning new skills and enjoying the ultimate human experience… Surfing!

Hi there!
I'm Carl. I've been surfing for over 23 years and surfed in multiple events including the South African Champs. I've also been a judge for Surfing South Africa and helped in management of the up and coming juniors and kept them stoked from one comp to the next. Aside from that I love free surfing and am much better on the soul side of surfing with friends at off the chart surf spots and still get amped to search for barrels and peeling smackable waves! Surf coaching made me always keen to give help and knowledge where I can but I always keep a willingness to learn about the journey called life!

AKA: Carlos

My name is Alex, for the past four years my top interest has been experiencing the positive psychological effects surfing has as a form of therapy. Not only does surfing benefit my physical, mental emotional, and spiritual well-being, but it has also given me a means to be even more calm, clear, and present in a way I never even imagined possible in all my other daily affairs. All I want now is to give back what has been so freely given to me. In the hopes that I might be able to assist others in recovering their passions and discovering their purpose in life, through the wonderful joys of surfing!

Hello I'm Jay, the head instructor for Kapowui. I've been surfing 20 years and teaching at Kapowui for the last 3.

I’m from a small island up north called Quadra Island, with a population of 1500, it's located in British Columbia Canada. I've worked on big fishing trawlers, oil rigs and every other dirty, dangerous, frozen job you can imagine.

But in my free time I surfed up and down the west coast of Vancouver island. During the winter there are some icy fun size beast mode waves. But let me tell you that there's nothing better then surfing in just board shorts here in Southern California. I have surfed in many sun drenched destinations such as Mexico, Bali, Trinidad & Tobago, Indonesia, and many other tropical locations. I have been snowboarding and skateboarding since I was a little knuckle dragger and still do when I'm not surfing. My love for the ocean comes from being raised on Island life and shredding everyday. I found my calling teaching surfing, so life is great.  Let me show you what makes surfing the best sport in the world.  Let's grab a board, get in the water, and make it the best day you have ever had.

AKA QUASIMODO. Fun fact: Jay is very active in the church, a true gentle giant, and a coaches coach.

BEST WITH; ALL, ESPECIALLY ATHLETES AND LARGE GROUPS. Jay is a coaches coach, more of a drill sergeant. If you are looking for a cheerleader DO NOT BOOK HIM.
